Dold safety relays use positively guided contacts to provide a fail-safe system in safety critical applications. In a Dold safety relay the contacts  have a mechanical link  (hence, positively guided) which force guides the  contacts so that they must switch together or not at all (for example if one set of contacts have welded due to external circuit overload). This can be used in a variety of situations, for example to prevent a door lock releasing whilst a machine is still running.
